CALL FOR PAPERS

*DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS - 15 FEBRUARY 2006*
*DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF FULL PAPERS - 15 JULY 2006*

INVITED TOPICS

Abstracts on all types of Caribbean languages, including Amerindian languages, creole languages, standard and non-standard varieties, and immigrant languages are invited. For Dominica 2006, abstracts on all aspects of Caribbean French Creole, Kokoy, and Arawakan languages, notably Dominican Island Carib and Central American Garífuna (Black Carib), are especially invited and strongly encouraged.

Abstracts on any of the following pertinent areas in Caribbean language(s) and linguistics are invited:

  • phonology
  • morphology
  • syntax
  • semantics
  • lexicon
  • sociology of language and sociolinguistics
  • dialectology
  • language development or history, and
  • language in education.

Papers are normally given in English or French, but may be submitted in any other Caribbean language - Spanish, Kwéyòl/Kreyol, Dutch, etc., once special arrangements are made with the Conference organisers.

Abstracts should be saved as SCL2006_SURNAME.doc, and should be submitted in electronic format to the SCL Secretary-Treasurer (secretary (a) scl-online.net) by 15 February 2006. Notification of acceptance will be given by 15 April 2006.

Where it is not possible to send an abstract via e-mail, paper abstracts and/or labelled diskette may be submitted to the following mailing address:

    Faculty of Humanities and Education

    ABSTRACTS
    ELECTRONIC FORMAT

    Please observe the following guidelines:

    1. An abstract (see sample abstract outline below) must be no more than 500 words. Please note the word count at the bottom of the abstract. Except for the instructions given below, no special form or format is needed for this initial submission of the abstract.

    2. Special fonts: If your abstract uses any special fonts, you must also send either (a) a paper copy to the address shown below (same deadline), or (b) a pdf file by e-mail, as special fonts often do not transmit accurately, except for IPA extensions in Unicode fonts such as Lucida Sans Unicode. (If you don't have Adobe Acrobat software to create pdf files, click here for more information on creating Adobe PDF files online.) Indicate at the bottom of your e-mail that a hardcopy has been mailed. You should send your special fonts file via attachment, or by diskette.

    3. At the top of the abstract, put the title.

    4. For purposes of anonymity, do not put your name on the attached abstract. Your name should be only on the abstract submittal e-mail message.

    5. A sample abstract outline is given below.

Note: Please send the abstract as an ATTACHMENT, using Microsoft Word (Option A). If that option is not available, paste it into the body of an e-mail message (Option B). When using Option A, include the following at the beginning of your e-mail message only, not in the attached Word document containing your abstract. When using Option B (submission via e-mail message), please follow this format (use the numbering system given below):

    1. TITLE OF ABSTRACT:
    2. NAME:
    3. ADDRESS:
    4. AFFILIATION:
    5. STATUS (lecturer, student, other):
    6. E-MAIL ADDRESS (give an alternative one, if possible):

    SAMPLE ABSTRACT OUTLINE

Abstracts may be rejected because they omit crucial information rather than because of errors in what they include. A suggested outline for abstracts is as follows:

    1. Choose a title that clearly indicates the topic of the paper and is no more than one line long.

    2. State the problem or research question raised by prior work, with specific reference to relevant prior research.

    3. State the main point or argument of the proposed presentation.

    4. Cite sufficient data, and explain why and how they support the main point or argument. When examples are in languages or varieties other than standard English, provide word by word glosses and capitalise the portions of the examples which are critical to the argument. Explain abbreviations at their first occurrence.

    5. If your paper presents the results of experiments, but collection of results is not yet complete, then report what results you have already obtained in sufficient detail so that your abstract may be evaluated. Also indicate the nature of the experimental design and the specific hypothesis tested.

    6. State the relevance of your ideas to past work or to the future development of the field. Describe analyses in as much detail as possible. Avoid saying in effect "a solution to this problem will be presented." If you are taking a stand on a controversial issue, summarise the arguments that lead you to your position.

    7. State the contribution to linguistic research made by the analysis.

    8. While in-text citation of the relevant literature is essential, a separate list of references at the end of the abstract is generally unnecessary.

    PAPERS
    ELECTRONIC FORMAT

*DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION OF FULL PAPERS - 15 JULY 2006*

Full papers should be saved as SCL2006_SURNAME_FT.doc, and should be accompanied by a short 50-75 word bio.

Presentations may be given in the form of papers, posters, and audio-visual presentations. Upon acceptance of your abstract, please specify on your registration form (available soon) what electronic media you will need to support your presentation.
